there is never a dull moment with my much older, and wiser brother.
by much older, I mean a mere twenty two months... but I take those months seriously as I count the gray hairs that are beginning to make an appearance.

Rockstar can be quite the character and full of laughs...
this particular day was no different, as I welcomed him into the studio for some Q&A time with scsd. I was happy to take on the role of the little sister wanting to make her big brother proud. I was thrilled actually.
no need for preparation on my behalf ... I figured we would just feed off each other's vibe - which is exactly how it went down.

HILARIOUS.
and even more so... very sweet.

Thank you, Rocky, for my 15 seconds of fame ... they were the best 15 seconds of the day! and thank you for spending your entire morning with me just to capture those 15 amazing seconds ... I cherish any moment we can spend together in this crazy life!

WE'RE GETTING MARRIED!!!!!!!

I've been waiting so long to scream that from the rooftops but the work days have consumed my being ... The future hubs popped that little question last weekend, and after an evening celebrating with amazing friends - we were like ships in the night until this past weekend.

Saturday night we finally had some down time so that we could just enjoy each other and celebrate the engagement ... after one long week at work and barely seeing each other, it was the perfect amount of everything.

We are SO excited, our hearts our full!

she wanted her own little photo shoot too ... I permitted :)

Thank you LRT for the beautiful new crystal ... such a sweet friend who listened to a simple statement of spending the evening with my love, and then made it that much more beautiful. It was our very first Crate and Barrel box too ... oh, the little things ...

I'll post the engagement story later this week, but couldn't wait another minute to at least tell you lovelies!

this monday morning I'm giving my full attention to a story I have been following for quite some time now ... and with each post I read, my heart is filled with an array of emotions that leaves me laughing, crying, grateful, hopeful, heartbroken, and in awe... all at the same time.

Meet Ashley.

She's a mother, wife, daughter, sister, successful business owner, best friend, and quickly becoming my hero.
She's amazing...
I have yet to meet her personally, but her story has me drawn to the pages of her blog, Lil Blue Boo.

I first met her sister, Perry, at a Haute Happy Hour event last year and was quickly drawn to her energy. Although I don't regularly stay in touch with Perry as I would hope, the power of social media has led me to Ashley's story... and I'm completely absorbed as I send my positive energy her way.

Ashley's heartbreaking story of her fight with cancer is quickly enlightened with her motto to "Choose Joy" ... She holds true to its meaning while she fights for her life and builds courage and strength from this curveball life has thrown her.
I am ...
Inspired... deeply.
Amazed ... completely.

I encourage you to join myself and Ashley's friends and family to help her in this journey. With open hearts and minds, there's no greater joy than to send love and encouragement to someone truly in need.

An auction is being held in her honor February 27th-29th in an effort to raise EPIC funds to help her in this fight against such an awful disease. They are still taking donations for the auction, as well as an opportunity to send your love directly to her donations account. My heart is full of encouragement and love for this event. I love my family over at QCE oh so very much.

so when they asked me to show our readers the essence of a beautifully "scaped" table, I couldn't help but jump to the occasion.

I very-much-so enjoy entertaining, and as you may already know - kind of have a thing for design ...

design + entertaining = one killer dinner party.

if only I could get friends together every weekend for good food, wine, and conversation.

nowadays, we have to plan at least a month or more in advance, babysitters have to be arranged, work cannot be consuming our thoughts, and we have to have had at least 10 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours...

spontaneity went out the door in 1995...

right after we partied like it was 1999.

The plus side, taking that time to plan an intimate dinner for two or a feast for eight, brings a little spark back into our lives. The details will shine, and your guests will appreciate the love that went into simply celebrating each other.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and we would love to hear what you have planned!

I am a food lover and a sweets addict ... any chance I get to try something out of my comfort zone, I am IN! We just so happen to be heading to Barcelona in March and I canNOT wait to partake in the smorgasbord of yumminess.

We do have a favorite here in Charlotte if we're in the mood for a little cultural experience. Copper, with its amazing Indian cuisine, faux tiger print walls, and seductive dim lighting makes us want to canoodle all night on the same side of the table ... oh yes, that's us. Don't hate.

We recently made Copper our "date night" restaurant of choice and enjoyed two deliciously large plates of meats and spices over a bottle of wine. Afterwards, we rolled ourselves over to the theater to see what I partially remember as Hugo ... I lasted a total of fifteen minutes before I was fast asleep and when I woke up (an hour later) I glanced over at the fav who also happened to be fast asleep, mouth open, serenading the theater with his shocking snores ... I'm not really sure how long this had gone on, so I quickly shook the little nugget and pointed to the exit ... with no hesitation, we ran out of the theater and not a clue as to how the movie ended ... I'm not even sure I know how it started.

needless to say, our date night at Copper left a lasting impression, and since then I've stumbled upon a different perspective to copper that is has made a very unique first impression.

january detox is quickly approaching it's end and I have a bottle of Veuve ~~dying to be~~ patiently waiting to be opened. it has been quite a busy month so far, and we have realized that taking away all of life's guilty pleasures at one time is well, quite ridiculous. Without the occasional adult beverage, sweet snack, or fried food, irritable, irrational, and irresoluteness have become regulars amongst our days... which have only led to some hilarious stories of course. Absurd arguments over why only 6 cups of coffee were made on Saturday instead of 8 OR over how much fiber is in a box of cereal have eventually turned into moments of laughter and tears (happy ones of course) ... Don't you just wish you could be a fly on the wall in my house? it really is pure entertainment.

life's sugary goodness may not have been on tap here recently, but take a glance at what we have to share with you lovelies this coming month ...

we're working on a guest bedroom for one of our most favorite clients ... really. she is. making friends with our other 13 most favorite clients nonetheless, but she really is dear to my heart. Hi Jenn!!

I hope she doesn't kill me for pulling the trigger on showing you guys where we are at in the design process ... I know she won't, her daily yoga practice ensures putting the kabosh on killing sprees ;) mediation = serenity.
hmmmm maybe I should up my daily yoga dose! ( I promise no killing sprees took place during the creation of this blog post)

One of the inspiration pieces for this room was Cole & Sons Birch Wallcovering ...

Although I am a huge fan of wallcoverings, sometimes the client is not so sure ... not necessarily for the looks but for the convenience... We all like change and in the event the change bug occurs sooner than later, wallpaper might not be a good option for you. That's why the design gods created stencils... and paint .... and people with skills who like to use the paint + stencil to create you a masterpiece.

Since these shots were taken, we've added some gorgeous window treatments, nightstands and lamps ... just waiting on the final piece to the puzzle : the bed and all it's gloriousness ...

I left the room yesterday feeling pretty cozy, guests are going to rest peacefully inside these walls ...
Until the big reveal : Final installation is soon approaching on the day of love - two.fourteen.

Q. what do you do when a room in your home suddenly becomes vacant?

A. you watch your fav act like a kid on Christmas morning because he either gets a man cave or better yet : an exercise room.

next question ...

an exercise room on the first floor, stop #3 on a guided house tour, does not exactly appeal to this designer BUT how can you resist the smiles and energy that are oozing from the fav's pores?

A. you can't.

so, you put your big girl designer pants on and you go to work.

Concept #1 :

he wants rubber mat flooring. goodness.

compromise : black and white checkerboard matting.

Deal.

Concept #2 :

the only piece of furniture left in said room is the biggest file cabinet ever. Its got to go.

we need storage and a place for the TV - without spending a big chunk of change.

Ikea to save the day. a high gloss white cabinet with a frosted glass top will do the trick

added bonus : Ikea's frozen yogurt cone ... it's healthy, yes?

Concept #3

mirrored wall. an entire wall. glued to the surface and framed out in a metallic molding to add a designer's touch.

the fav wants to see his muscles in action. I want to make sure my bum is still in check.

go big or go home, who wants a standard floor mirror? Not I.

Done.

second added bonus : should this room eventually become a baby abode, a mirrored wall easily transitions into a stylish crib wall. he can check out his faux-hawk at all times. Glorious. the kid's gotta stay funky fly fresh, yes?

so after that stream of consciousness .... what are your thoughts on an entire wall decked out in mirror?

I personally LOVE.

they lighten. they brighten. they provide a conversation piece and a little glamour.

all exercise rooms should have a bit of glamour!

it's officially winter ... I say that, but it's also the QC, and tomorrow it could be 65 degrees out ... goodness, I love Mother Nature and every drop of her ADD ... keeps it interesting, yes?

interesting, and for right now ... just plain cold. I've stocked my drawers with winter "go-to's" finding this irresistible little noggin warmer my most favorite of all ... seriously, it can take you from scaring children on your no makeup-Sundays, to total adorb status... Not to mention, you become a hit with the 7 year old neighbor kid who happens to be wearing the same hat but in the panda version... Yes, I'm thirty.

1. Aquiesse Monterey Pine Candle : Ok so I still can't come to grips that the holidays are over, the tree is gone, and the twinkle twinkle that gave my home such a beautiful golden glow is now packed away in the attic. boo hiss. This candle takes the blues away and keeps the spirit warm.

2. Chincilla Throw : Love my fur, faux fur, and this beauty not only keeps you warm but makes a beautiful statement in your home as well. I keep mine across the foot of my bed, and then carry her awesomeness downstairs when its cuddle time on the sofa.

3. MUST HAVE ALERT : Jimmy Choo Coffee Mug Sleeve. Seriously? Seriously. Really I just want to be "that girl" that orders a grande double espresso half caff upside down sugar free vanilla soy extra hot with one ice cube in a venti cup please, Starbucks disaster that shoos away the generic cardboard sleeve and then whips this bad boy out of her bag as she flips her hair and walks away.... it's on the bucket list. done. My apologies if you are "that girl."

4. American Apparel Circle Scarf - oh, how I love thee... I have two. One b/w tie dye, one cream ... don't judge a book by it's cover, its not your every day scarf. The amount of fabric used to make this thing allows it to not only hang to your knees, but you can belt it, you can swag it, you can wrap it around 3 times for super chilly days (or when you need a hug), AND it can also serve as a blanket. Get one. Or three. Trust me.

5. Mrs. Moll Anderson... a doll. She's my hero. I do not lie. I met her last month and was instantly drawn to her energy. Her new book The Seductive Home wraps you up in its pages and guides you toward making your home a little sex kitten. Amazing.

6. Minnetonka Moccasin Slippers : If you know me, you know my moccs - they seem to be my signature ... but four years and four pairs later, I have almost contemplated giving them up ... Walking by 7 year olds on the streets wearing my shoes doesn't exactly appeal to me any more ... hats fine, shoes no. yes, I'm thirty. The fav gifted me these lovelies for Christmas so that I can enjoy all their goodness in the comfort of my home - perfect for keeping your little toots warm.

scsd teamed up with a few fabulous local interior designers and architects to be featured in the current issue of QC Exclusive, hitting the newsstands this week. Erica Hanks, the QCE style maven, made us look gorgeous in our threads from local boutiques and retailers... I still dream of the Gucci python heels I got to wear for a total of 27.7 seconds ... those were the best 27.7 seconds of my life. no doubt.

A few faces you should surely get to know :

Andrew Woodruff of Woodruff Architecture stole the show - unbelievably adorable and quite talented I must add.

Traci Zellar of Traci Zellar Designs blew us away with her sultry presence - who says a mother of two, and TWINS at that, can't rock out a photo shoot? You can currently find her rocking out some killer designs for her amazing clients.

Michael Williams of Liquid Design was a famous model in his previous life - GQ model. Seriously.

and me, Sc. - I'm still trying to absorb having my 8 x 10 mug inside these pages. Wow.

Such a talented group of creative souls that I'm so lucky to be a part of.

I have to say that I cheated this morning, but I had to. I got an email from 1st Dibs showing their curated list of vintage toys and games, and I just had to share my favorites. It's a "love~hate" relationship that I have with vintage toys... they can be cool, yet sometimes creepy at the same time. If you have any, try mixing them with more modern items in your home.... you tip the scale of total creepster if you fill your home with just these things. Just pick one or two.. (if you ever want me to come visit.)

on the third day of christmas: gingerbread houses

We're interior designers. We love homes, design, art, and basically anything of visual interest... what one thing could we love more than all of these things?

All of these things... plus SUGAR.

It's the gingerbread house... ahhh yes, that magical, glorious little house made of all things sweet. You know you're not supposed to eat it, but wait.. no one is looking.... they won't notice one shingle gone off the roof... will they? You take a bite, and quickly realize that the pre-fab gingerbread house you bought at World Market has probably been sitting on a shelf somewhere for the past 12 months... and you just ate it.

It's all in the spirit of Christmas.

there's such an amazing feeling that comes with having a best friend as your significant other.
an even more amazing feeling comes with the ability to make each other laugh and fill your lives with hysterical moments and tears of laughter.
a relationship abounds when it's carefree and honest.

If you know me, you know I have the WORST luck on the planet. I don't gamble, place bets, or play the lottery for that matter - because it's just NOT in my cards ... Lady Luck has refused my friendship requests on several occasions - I get the big DE-NY...
In most cases, more common than not, I find myself in the most ridiculous circumstances, eating the biggest slice of "get your ish together" pie.
I normally attribute it to my crazy, busy lifestyle ... If you look at a map of Charlotte, I will have probably covered every zip code within a 12 hour work day... and since I'm not the one to sit on my bum barricaded indoors (which is where I should be ... there, or a plastic bubble) statistically I am more susceptible to "incidents" ...
but then again, even when I'm home and not left to brave the elements ... cell phones fall in sinks filled with dishes soaking, tree limbs fall and break tables, AC units and hard drives crash, septic pipes collapse and the City of Charlotte has to rip our entire yard apart (use your imagination when envisioning the words septic + pipe + collapse) ... you would think the world is just falling apart around me ...

the truth of the matter is, I am thankful for everyone who has stuck around to witness this crazy world I live in ... you're still my friend and for that, I am thankful.

Most importantly, the fav, who we'll call Johnny - because that's his name .. is there for it all - and is STILL here ... until now.
Mind you, each and every time some random occurrence develops, I give him the opportunity to run ... and run quickly.
Here is the email I received today, that had me in those hysterical tears as mentioned above ... Apparently this "letter" has been in the works for some time now, waiting for the perfect moment to fill in the blanks.

Dear Babe,

Now that [Fill in Latest Disaster here] has just happened, it’s clear to me that we should go our separate ways. I love you dearly and will miss your bum greatly, and it pains me to make this decision.

When [Disaster 1] happened – I thought to myself ‘it could happen to anyone’. But then when [Disaster 2] and [Disaster 3] occurred, I began to sense a trend. I believe that [latest disaster] has put us both over the edge.

I wish you the best.

PS You can have my Pathfinder and Jagger.

PSS Your stuff is already on the front lawn.

PSS Jagger pooped in your office, but it’s not your office anymore so it’s okay.

Babe I’m kidding! I love you!!!!

A little background :
1. No one could possibly want the Pathfinder - its extremely old, and well, I got into a little fender bender here recently ... and by fender bender, I mean I accelerated the timeline of purchasing a new vehicle. lovely.
B. Jagger is our lovable little Dobi mix who loves attention but is the most skittish/on-edge dog I have ever met. He swears we are out to kill him, why else would we love him, feed him, bathe him, give him a nice home? ... and we most recently discovered he likes to bite children. perfect. I don't want him either... and I mean that in the most loving way possible.
b2. He likes to poop in my office, and his sister, Sugar, likes to vomit on the expensive area rug.
4. SERENITY NOW.
5. god love him... Johnny, not Jagger.... or Sugar.

sometimes you just have to laugh.
and lucky for me (my only luck), Johnny has a good sense of humor.

Well... I googled monogram after I found photos, only to find out that only one of the photos I found actually constitutes a monogram. The others are "cyphers" and one is just a lonely letter.

I guess while impatiently waiting on Mad Men to start, I tuned in Sunday night to Pan Am to get my 1960's fix... Then I began to think, "How streamline, sophisticated, and classy this era in design that my parents grew up in was... will my own children one day have the same respect for the banana clips and neon socks that we used to wear in the 80's??" I'm going to go with a "No." and then say a little prayer that the "Mad Men" obsessed culture we're living in will continue to influence the way people dress and live today.... pretty please??

So in my Google search for some swoonworthy 60's interior images that would hopefully help drive my point home, I couldn't help but be drawn into one of the signature design elements of the period. *Sidenote: Just did further research and this signature design element was more prevalent during the 70's... oops.

The Conversation Pit.

Basically, some genius {Eero Saarinen} decided to sink a portion of the living room to create a more intimate seating arrangement for socializing... helping the living room remain the nucleus of the home, and a conversation area for family and entertaining.

Thank goodness for Coco, because I almost left the house this weekend looking as though I was going through an identity crisis. I glanced in the mirror and said 'Hi, I'm Sarah, who the heck are you? ... go back upstairs and please don't ever come back down' ... I had one too many in the accessories department, and at any moment could have started slurring my speech. see what I did there? fine, moving on.

Even in our home we are constantly editing. Accessories are the final piece to the puzzle, pulling together your interior ensemble to further speak your personality. When is enough not enough? and too little, too much?

Confusing?

Each piece should be unique in it's own right and tell a story on it's own... Grouped together with other pieces in varying heights and textures, and you've just created a masterpiece.

we scour our online resources and design library daily, in search of the perfect gems to incorporate in our design schemes ... we focus on staying in touch with our inner warp and woof of a designer's life... the fabric of our lives ... no, we're not talking about cotton - although cotton does play a major role when it comes to upholstery, window treatments, and rugs ... and recently, rugs have played a major role in pulling the entire room together, which has us focusing more on our weft and warp. We're not speaking jibberish here, as warp and weft are used in reference to textiles, specifically those that are woven. Warp and weft are the technical terms for the two types of threads used to create a finished woven product. The warp is stretched lengthwise, while the weft is woven between the warp to create various patterns.... and you thought we just played with pretty fabric all day - we're actually smart around here people!

Enter New Moon Rugs, a delicious array of modern day rugs for any client ... eye candy for the soul, a designer's soul, and we couldn't help but stash a couple in our inventory... Fed Ex came yesterday and we almost baked another cake to celebrate... just a couple goodies to make us smile today ...

My girlfriend, Elizabeth, and I hosted our monthly Dinner Club last weekend; an Unbirthday Party that transformed my backyard into Wonderland ... Alice didn't rsvp, but she sent the White Rabbit to orchestrate the festivities. If I could entertain and design dinner parties every weekend, sign me up ... We dedicated a couple evenings to arts and crafts night, creating place settings out of playing cards, teasing guests with faux birthday presents wrapped in graphic papers, and saving newspapers from the recycle bins to bloom handmade roses ... An array of clocks displayed the wrong time, because who needs the time when dessert is the first course. The most exciting part, for me at least, was being able to use both our grandmother's china and crystal - giving the decor a vintage feel and a story to tell. It was an Unbirthday to remember and the presents are still sitting on my back porch because I don't have the heart to throw them away ...
